Physical Product Designer Intern
Hardware, Materials & Prototyping
About the Role
Work directly with the product development team to design, prototype, and iterate physical products — including railing systems, hardware components, and architectural fixtures.
This role spans the full physical design cycle: concept through to tested, manufacturable prototype. You will visit workshops and fabrication facilities, get your hands on real materials, and use modern tools including 3D software and rapid prototyping technologies.
This is a hands-on role. If you want to design from behind a screen only, this is not the right fit. If you want to understand how things are actually made, this is exactly right.
Responsibilities
Concept & Ideation
Develop physical product concepts from briefs — sketching, ideation, and form exploration.
3D Modelling & Technical Drawing
Create 3D models and technical drawings using CAD/3D design software.
Workshop & Fabrication
Visit workshops and fabrication facilities to understand manufacturing constraints and material behaviour.
Build & Test Prototypes
Build and test physical prototypes using 3D printing, rapid prototyping, and manual fabrication techniques.
Materials Work
Work with wood, metals, steel, and composites — understanding their properties and limitations.
Document & Iterate
Document design decisions, material specs, and test results. Iterate based on performance and feedback.
Requirements
Product / Industrial Design Background
Foundational understanding of physical product design, industrial design, or a related discipline.
3D Modelling Software
Basic knowledge of Fusion 360, SolidWorks, Rhino, or equivalent CAD tools.
Materials Knowledge
Understanding of metals, steel, wood, and composites — their properties and manufacturing implications.
Hands-on Willingness
Ability to build or assist in building rough prototypes. This role requires physical engagement with materials and tools.
AI & Generative Design Tools
Basic or above proficiency in AI-assisted 3D modelling or generative design tools (Fusion 360 Generative, Autodesk AI, or equivalent). Familiarity with 3D printing workflows required.
